He showed up at the door, precisely at 9:30 p.m. I hated people who came too early, but he had a viable excuse. Apparently, we had to get in costume. And Diana had provided him the funds and the directions to a local actor’s outfitting costumier. Kevin shoved a clothes bag into my hand and asked if I needed any help getting dressed.

Whether I would need help or not, I, of course, refused, took the bag, and headed upstairs toward my bedroom. Kevin was given the use of the office for his own private changing room.

Most of the costume was easy enough. It was simply, for the most part, a somewhat overblown form of standard evening clothes. At least, according to feel and the brief description Kevin had given me.

The shirt, a scarlet satin, far too puffy with a frilled front and cuffs, and with a black cross-ribbon tie. The jacket and pants were apparently black. I felt a stripe of satin down the outside of each pant leg. Presumably black. I hoped at least, black. If it were red to match the shirt, I would look like a clown in formal wear, I feared. At least there was no cummerbund, but instead a narrow belt and oversized buckle carved into some sort of animal face. Probably a wolf, from my fingers’ touch. Or maybe the muzzle of a bat?

My only real problems were the cufflinks. Shaped like little skulls. Unable to determine by feel alone, since they were so small, I snapped my fingers over them several times to confirm, by sound reflection, the garishness of a hollowed mouth and grinning eye sockets in the jewelry. My fingers were narrow and I was extremely dexterous as a vampire. But matching up the holes and dealing with the puffy fabric around the wrists almost drove me to a fury of frustration.

I hated cufflinks. And then I remembered. Another Halloween so many years ago.
